Sporting Notes.

[By Peeping Tom ] I should say, judging from the excellent report in the Otago Daily Times of last Saturday’s Anniversary Pace meeting at Dunedin, that Black and Red is a much improved colt, and his performance in the Anniversary Handicap labels him dangerous goods for the Great Autumn Handicap at Christchurch. Van Buren’a win in the OlifFs Handicap must have been quite unexpected, or he would never have paid ( - such a thumping dividend. This son of Vanguard and Wild Rose has very soon returned his purchase money to Messrs Stephenson and Hazlett, and I would not be at all surprised to see him turn out a second Derby for the stable. My picks for four of the events did not come off in any one instance. Certainly Jack Harkaway was second in the Hurdle Race, but there was no merit in the performance. Rothamstrad got within a neck of Cactus for the Selling Race, but tipping horses that run second is not much good to backers. A 1 together the winners appeartohave been pretty well hidden, but “ Mazeppa ” tipped Mavlin or Van Buren for the Cliffs, albeit the public do not seem to have anticipated a stiff struggle between the stable companions. Ulster and Stimulant both appear to have been outclassed in the Cliff’s Handicap, but Ulster managed to get second money in the Courolation. Our old friend Stimulant although served up a very warm favorite, only managing to secure tRa bar ran honor or third place. Glancing through tho weights for the

Jane Eyre, Bellicentand Black and Red appear a likely half dozen from which the winner of the Race may come. For the Easter Handicap Bloodshot, King’s Bowman, Mareunna, Culverin, Black and Red and Ambush appear to be well handicapped, the lastnamed especially so, and 1 would not be surprised to see Mr Reid’s mare win right out. Mr R. H. Baird has a very fine colt on hand, got by Silvennark out of a Dnntroon mare(Miss Lucy’s Dam), that he is prepared to sell or lease for neXjt season’s racing on easy terms. This is a chance for some up-country sport to secure a candidate for this year’s Cromwell Derby.
