One for " Civis."—"Cyclops" in the Ensign writes :— 4< ' Civis'list week moralised at length upon the fact of the body of some poor unknown wanderer being foand on the ranges behind Flagstaff; taking the gruesome opportunity to wedge in a solid chunk of funereal humor. ' Civis ' dilates upon the fact that a copy of the Witness was found close to the body, aud hopes that the deceased's last moments wera soothed by a perusal of Passing Notes. Herein lies the clue to the whole mystery. The poor fellow had not died of thirst, for watar in abuudance was close to his tent ; neither had he died of thirst, for water in abuudauce was close to his tent; neither had he died of starvation, for two loaves were found there. The problem was, what caused the man's death? 'Civis,' himself, has supplied the solution. The man, doubtless a stranger to this country, had somehow, come into possession of the paper, and, glancing down its columns, he probably hit on Passing Notes. At the first paragraph his blood almost ceased to circulate, at the second he became paralysed all over, at the third his reason tottered on her throne and fell, and at the fourth he gently folded the paper and died.

A Shilling an Ache.— A contractor has tendered for stooking 520 acres of grain at one shilling an acre, in the Raugitikei district. His tender was accepted.. A young man marrried two girls—one in Balclutha and the other at Goie—in the same week, aud is then supposed to have " skipped by the light of the moon." The consolate wives are making anxious inquiries for him.—Dunedin Star. Riding Accident. —Miss Wilhelmina Ferguson, met with a v<*vy painful accident when riding home from Gore to Ptikarau, on Friday. Her horse shied at a passing tram aud threw her, with the result that she : sustained fractures of both legs below the knees, the one of the left leg being of a very severe nature. She was taken to the Southland Hospital. An Eli'Ctric Storm.—The Thames Star reports that a thunderstorm of a most severe nature passed over the township of Waiorongomai last week, sha:teringseveral.telegraph posts and tearing down several, trees. At the telegraph office Mrs Jeffcry was rendered unconscious, and three cats were killed. A dog was killed whilst standing beside the owner, who was milking a cow. at the time. Death Preferable —A well-dre«sed woman, whose dead body was taken out of the Thames recently, contained nothing to lead to identification. A note in the pocket ran: —" When God made man, and as his comforter created woman, it seems impossible to believe that he intended man should make a woman's life so great a misery that death is welcomed with greater joy, whether it be heaven or hell, than all the pleasure could buy." Diabolical Murder —Dr Lamb, writing from the New Hebrides, reports the diabolical murder of a boy belonging to mission station, and says the method pursued is to garrote the victim and then, when he is unconscious, lay him on his face and twist his neck from behind sufficiently to crush- the larynx without dislocating the cervical vertibrae. The victim recovers consciousness, but is uuable to speak 1 and dies within 24 hours from'effusion of the blood from the spine into the cranium and lungs, without being able to indicate the murderer. Social Danck. —Last week we omitted to mention that the ladies, connected with the late bazaar in aid of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, gave a social dance to their numerous friends on Friday evening, January lOth inst. It proved very enjoyable indeed, and the ladies spared no paius to make it so. The music was supplied by the Arrow String Band, assisted by Mr \V. Murphy (violin). At intervals during the evening, sonas wore rendered by Mises A. Cotter and L. dela Perrelle, and Messrs W. Selby jun., and Kelly. Safe Bind Safe Find.—The deceased wife of a Wellington builder was buried last weak in concrete at Karori cemetery. A thick layer of concrete was put on the bottom, and on to this the'eoffin was laid after the burial service had been read. Concrete was filled in all round ami on top. Interments on this plan it is contended might take place in any kind of soil at any depth and in the heart of any city without dinger to the health of the community. The deceased's husband holds strong views on sanitation questions, ana the uhamal interment was in keeping with an agreement made some ten years ago with another well known citizen to the effect that when a death occurred in either family the other should see to the burial in the manner stated.
