Lord Laaiington, addressing a meeting of Tories at St, Pancras, said that the recent crisis showed that the political parties were united against attacks on the colonial and foreign interests of Great Britain. The report of the committee of the United States Senate, asserts that the sovereign right forbids the cutting out of the canal across the Isthmus of Panama. Davies, the mover of the resolution in committee is a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election. President Cleveland refused tc accept the resolution in the Senate. The crew were saved. Adelaide, January 22. The authoiities are investigating a strange case of the alleged illegal detention of a Chinese girl, age sixteen, by one of her countrymen. Some neighbors climbed the roof and saw through the skylight the girl almost naked and in a filthy condition, the police then broke in. The girl stated that she had been detained against her will in an attic for eleven months. The Chinamen's version is that the girl came to the colony with a Chinese lady who returned to China and he subsequently found it necessary to restrict the girl-s liberty. Coolgardie, January 22. The sale of. the Londonderry mine was completed yesterday when a cheque for £27,000 was paid to the lucky prospector who had already secured a deposit of £30,000. Last night Davies", one of the pi'ospectors was garotted and robbed of bank receipts for £30,000. Dunedin, January 22. The Shearing at Campbell and Sons' Benraore station has shown that the deaths in excess of the ordinary mortality through the severe winter was 32661 sheep. ~ Dr Ewart has accepted the offer of the Trustees to remain in charga of the Wellington Hospital, his salary to be increased from £350 to £7OO and a house to be erected.
