NO “GHOSTS”

Reference to Arrowtown as a “ghost town” which was made in a Shell Oil Company advertisement appearing in “ New Zealand Motor World ” on August 8 was not appreciated by the Arrowtown Borough Council which, at its last meeting, stigmatised this description of the town as “ uncalled for.” The “ ghosts ” were still very much alive, said councillors, deciding to write to the editor of the “ Motor World” asking for an explanation of the epithet.

Borough was approved, and the appointment of Messrs Thompson, Douglas and Fletcher to the committee confirmed. A New Zealand Standard Institute’s communication stating that a model set of by-laws was not available was received. Messrs Birchell and Hensmaip Queenstown, wrote intimating that a quantity of pipe offered was insufficient. Clutha Catchment Affairs No representative of the council was available to attend a meeting of the Clutha Catchment Board at Dunedin on September 1. The Local Government Catchment Commission advised that a public inquiry into the Clutha catchment area is to be held at Dunedin on September 15. A letter from the Public Works Office stating that the department would not be responsible for any payment for private magnetic truck engagements made by local bodies for cleaning main highways was read. The report as submitted by the chairman of the Works Committee, Cr J. R. Cowie, was adopted. It was resolved that stop cocks at Lows and School receive attention. It was decided that a general collection of rubbish be made on October 7. Acting on the advice of the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, it was decided to a fire plug at the borough extension, to cover the residences there.
