STILL “ UP AND DOING ” ON 80th BIRTHDAY On the eve of his eightieth birthday last week, Mr Matthew Hunter, a welWmown figure for many years, advised a Mail representative that he was about to embark on a five-months’ painting contract. At the end of that time he intended retiring and would probably make his home at G-len-orchy. Bom at Switzers, Southland (now known as Waikaia), Mr Hunter can tell many stories, illuminated with his great sense of humour, of that colorful area where, as in the Wakatipu district, gold was to be had for the taking. “It was a great surprise, and they are great people these friends of mine,” said Mr Hunter when he found a cake and several presents waiting for him on the day he celebrated the achievement of four score years.
