OFF TO THE WAR!
HELENSVILLE TO THE
FRONT
OUR PATRIOTIC LADIES
HELENSVILLE, taking time by the forelock, is up in arms to asassist the Empire all it can.
The ECHO will do its best to help along the cause.
A collection is being made here to swell the Herald Patriotic Fund and already £25 have been forwarded by Mr H. W. Stringer (Town Clerk), while a similar amount is also in hand. The sum of £18 was collected within two hours. And Mr John A. Wilson of Garfield road has donated a good, sound horse.
Subscription lists are lying at the ECHO office, all stores, hotels tobacconists, etc, and everyone is invited to swe 1 the fund ;Is and upwards will be acceptable. Helensville should give .a good lead, in fact it's moving now.
But two of " our boys " (Joe Marshall, Helensville, and P. Fulton, Waimauku), have so far, responded to the sound of the bugle call and are now in Wellington, but dozens here are clamouring to be off to the front.
Those examined and who passed the Doctor's examination for the front include five men of the local Platoon (No. 9) of "C" Company, namely, Capt. A. K. Gray, and Prs. G. H. Nicholls, H. E. McKenzie, — Hill, and E. E. Judge.
These men leave here for the Consentration Camp at Epsom, on Saturday, per mid-day train. Lieu. Screaton, also of " C " Coy. accompanies the 15th Compy.
The members, clerk and engineer of the Waitemata County Council (in which we are interested), have subscribed £60 towards the funds.
The local Masonic fraternity have decided to cancel their annual ball announced to take place in the Foresters' Hall on 27th inst. A wise and patriotic thought which will enable the members of Duke of Albany Lodge, No. 2073, E.C. and their many friends to contribute the proverbial guinea fee to the war funds.
The Helensville Musical Society, which is giving a great treat on Aug. 25th, has decided to contrib.ute the surplus (after takings) to the same object.—See advt.
A number of ladies met at Mrs Oxley's residence on Thursday afternoon to consider ways and means of raising funds, and after forming a Women's Patriotic League, it was agreed that each woman in Helensville should contribute 6d per week as long as the war lasts.
Also, a Sewing Bee was formed to make underclothing for the Contingenters, and subscriptions were taken up to pin-chase material such as flannel, etc., for the purpose.
