KAUKAPAKAPA SPORTS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

The Kaukapakapa Athletic Club's Annual Sports held in Mr Jas. Drinnan's paddock, Kaukapakapa, on Thursday, were fairlywell attended, there being visitors from all round, the district, including a number from Helensville. The day was an ideal one, and all the events brought out fair entries, a good afternoon's sport being the result. The handicapping by Messrs G. Shanks, H. Cole, and H. Dye was well carried out, and gave some close finishes. The Kaukapakapa Cup, was won after a good race by G. Shanks, in 13 1-5 sees. The most interesting race of the day was the whistling race on horseback. The competitors galloped from a given point to a barrier where they dismounted and ran about 50 yards, whistled a tune which had to be recorded by a lady, ran back,-mounted their horses and rode once round the course. Callagher and Parkes started close together on the home journey, the former, having the lead and the fastest horse, came in first, Parkes being second, L. Drinnan third, and A. Shanks fourth. Parkes was disqualified, having the wrong tune marked down. A protest was entered by A. Shanks, but the committee allowed the second money to be divided between him and Drinnan. All the other events were well contested, and the officials in charge, Messrs G. Dye and R. Kinlock, judges, and Mr H. Cole, starter, and the handicapped already mentioned worked hard, getting the lengthy programme finished in good time. A word of praise is due to the energetic secretary, Mr H. Dye, for the able manner in which he carried out his numerous duties, and Mr G. Shanks for the laying out of the ground. The grounds on which the Sports were held, the use of which was kindly given by Mr Jas. Drinnan, are splendidly situated and adapted for athletic gatherings, the course being well sheltered by a number of pine trees, and the thanks of the committee are heartily tendered that gentleman. There were several side shows on the ground, and a well provided refreshment booth in charge of Mr Soloman, which did fair business during the day. In the evening a social was held in the Kaukapakapa Hall, being well attended, and dancing was enjoyed till after midnight, to music supplied by Misses Little and Donovan.
