An interview took place to-day between Graham Berry, Agent-General for Victoria, and Osborn Morgan, Under - Secretary of State for the Colonies, at which the latter stated that in view of the assurances recently given by the French Government, there was no cause for alarm at hoisting the French flag in the Hebrides. Graham Berry is preparing despatches for the Colonial Office on the subject, pointing to the absence of any recent outrages in the Hebrides which might justify the action of the French Government, and urging that the Imperial Government should make inquiry as to the necessity for the recent action of the French. Berry further states that in the opinion of the Victorian Government the British flag should in the meantime also be hoisted at the Hebrides. Sir Alex. Stewart, ex-Premier of New South Wales, died to-day aged 61. Colonel Walker has been nominated by the Conservative party to contest Midlothian at the general election. Australian mails, from Melbourne May 4th, were delivered in London today, via Brindisi. (Received June 17, 10.40 p.m.) Evening. The third series of colonial wool auctions opened to-day before a large attendance of home and foreign buyers. The catalogue comprised 12,400 bales, for which a good competition was manifested, chiefly on foreign account. At the close of the sale, scoured wools ruled at 3d, greasy, fully 2d, and cross-brerls, Id per lb. higher than at the close of the previous auctions. The present series of sales close on the 20th prox. (Received June 18, 11,45 a.m.) Later. Sir Samuel Wilson has announced his intention to contest Portsmouth at the general election to the House of Commons.
