Overseas Freights
The Prime Minister in the House of Representatives announced a reduction in overseas freights which, he said, would mean a saving to the producers of New Zealand of a total sum of £625,000 per annum, the items being : Beef, mutton end lamb, a saving of £497,500 ; other meat items, £20,000; cheese, £75,000. Those figures were approximate only. The Prime Minister stated that the reduction had been secured by the Meat Producers Board which bad just completed a contract with the shipping companies for the carriage of New Zealand refrigerated produce. The big reduction in the freight on pork had been secured in order to encourage farmers to undertake that industry. As far as'apples were concerned the shipping companies had undertaken that the freight from New Zealand would not at any time be greater than the freight between Tasmania and London. Mr Massey stated that he had been informed that the National Dairy Association bad also completed a contract. The freight on butter remained at 5s per box, but there was a reduction of £d on cheese, and that meant a great deal to the producers cf the Dominion. He desired to congratulate the Meat Board on the success which bad attended its negotiations with the shipping companies. He also desired to congratulate the producers, for the successions which had been secured for them would assist them in making their ledgers balance on the right side. He now looked forward to a reduction in freezing charges, for it was necessary that the cost of production should come down
