Time was not the only opponent matched against the young New Plymouth cyclist, 0. Barnard, in the course of his record-breaking ride from Auckland to Wellington. He had to contend with extreme cold, which left a film of ice on his jersey, and weariness, which resulted irt his falling asleep on his machine and crashing to the road.
