ALL-ROUND INCREASE
NEW ZEALAND LIQUOR BILL. Figures compiled and issued by the New Zealand Alliance show that the total amount spent in New Zealand in 1938 on beers, wines and spirits was £9,390,523. Compared with 1933, when the drink bill was £5,000,005, this represents an increase of £4,390,518, or 87.8 per cent.
The five-year period is adopted by the Alliance for a number of detailed comparisons. These show that the average consumption a head rose from 5.9 gallons in 1933 to 11.2 gallons last year. This was made up as follows, the 1933 figures being in parentheses: Spirits, 0.304 (0.220); wine, 0.124 (0.074); beer, imported, 0.077 (0.015); beer, New Zealand 10.710 (5.591).
The estimated expenditure a head of population rose from £3 5s to £5 17s 3d. There was an increase of 37.9 per cent, in the beer imported in 1938 as compared with 1937.
