MANGAPEHI NOTES

Mrs. H. Reinhardt, of Mangapehi, has returned home after a few days in Wellington.

Miss V. Brumby, of Hamilton, bas been the guest of her pai'ents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Brumby, of Mangapehi, for a week’s holiday.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Ball, of Marton, and Mrs. J. Cathie, of Eltham, have been the guests of their sister, Mrs. R. Wag’horn, of Kopaki. A bridge club has been formed recently in Mangapehi by a few enthusiastic bridge players, and is aptly named the Thirteen Club. On Friday last a very enjoyable evening was spent by twenty players, and the highest score was secured by Mrs. Costello.

On Sunday, July 16th, twelve members of the Wharehunga Golf Club motored to Waimiha to play a friendly mat6h against the Waimiha Club. Occasional showers failed to damp the enthusiasm of the players who, after the first round, were invited to luncheon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Jones. From the links, wonderful views of the surrounding districts being subject to heavy rain squalls, which at times completely blotted out portions of it, were frequent, and the number of wonderfully vivid rainbows was remarked upon. The Wharehunga Club was fairly well up on the day’s play, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the outing. On behalf of the visiting players, the president, Mr. J. Waghorn, thanked the Waimiha Club for their hospitality and extended a very cordial invitation for a return match at an early date. Mr. Jones suitably replied on behalf of the home team. The United Football Club held the fourth dance of the season in the Mangapehi Hall on Saturday evening, July 15th. Bright music was supplied by the Footballers’ Band, and extras by Miss Farrell and Mr. Russell. After supper Mr. J. Farrell, on behalf of the United Football Club, thanked those present for their attendance and presented the prizes won at Flag 500. The winners were Mrs. Brumby, Mrs. Goodin, Mr. Fitchett and Mr. Hall, and Mr. Fitchett also won the prize for being the last to hold the travelling flag. At the Hangatiki v. Mangapehi football match on Saturday neither side scored during the * afternoon’s play. The ball, having been precipitated into the river several times, became very greasy.
