HANGATIKI SCHOOL

A DAY AT OTOROHANGA. On Friday last the Hangatiki School football and basketball teams visited Otorhoanga school for return matches. This day had been keenly anticipated, because the event had twice been postponed on account of bad weather. The very fine modern building was much admired by the visitors. The games commenced soon after the visitors arrived. Again the teams were very evenly matched thanks to Otorohanga’s consideration for its visitors. The basketball game, played on an asphalt court, was very fast, though the home team did not have all their own way. At the end of the second spell the score was Otorohanga 8 goals, Hangatiki 6 goals. Meanwhile the football game was in progress. Here also the teams were so evenly matched that halftime arrived with no score. The second half was marked by more determination. Quite a good knowledge of the game was shown by members of each team. Good passing bouts occurred and from one of these Carr crossed the line and scored for the home team; the kick failed. Restarting, a home player got into trouble for which the visitors were awarded a penalty kick. This Hotu put over the bar, evening the scores. 3—3. After this, play changed from end to end rapidly, but though

both teams at times looked dangerous, neither scored again. The visitors were taken indoors and all sat down to the refreshments which had been lavishly provided. The home captains, in well-delivered little speeches, welcomed their visitors to Otorohanga. They commented very modestly on the games, and applauded the real sporting spirit in which they had been played, and expressed the wish that the teams may meet again.

The visiting captains replied, thanking their hosts for all the games and the entertainment provided, after which the visitors had to hurry to the station to catch the return train.
