FERTILISER STRIKE
NEW ACT TO APPLY. HON. P. C. WEBB'Si INTENTION. ENFORCEMENT AT ONCE. An intimation that he intended to apply the provision of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill to the present industrial dispute in Auckland—involving the chemical manure works —as soon as the bill became law, was given by the Minister, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in explaining in the House yesterday the reasons why the bill should be accorded urgency. “We have a stoppage in Auckland at present,” said Mr. Webb, “and it is necessary that legislation of the kind set out in the bill should be imposed. The alternative is to have those responsible before the Court and go through the cumbersome process of invoking the penal clauses. When this bill becomes law, action will be taken forthwith.
“So long as I am Minister of Labour those employees and employers who want the benefits of the law must comply with the law. We do not want to force this bill through, but as a matter of common sense I feel it should go through without delay.”
