FREE TREATMENT
OUT-PATIENT SERVICE. LODGE MEMBERS' POSITION. NORTH TARANAKI MEETING. Are friendly society members in North Taranaki to enjoy the privilege of free out-patient treatment at the New Plymouth Hospital even though this is not available under the hospital benefits of the Social Security Act now operating? The question is to be decided at a general meeting of members of the Taranaki Hospital District Friendly Societies' Association this month. Recently a circular was sent out to secretaries of all lodges in the district calling a meeting at New Plymouth on July 26 to decide, firstly, the future activities of the association, and,, secondly, the advisability or. otherwise of entering into contracts as from July 1, 1939, with hospital boards for out-patient treatment.
Effect of Act.
With the introduction of the hospital benefits under the Act on July 1 and the consequent free treatment for in-patients the contract between the Taranaki Hospital Board and more than 4000 lodge members automatically lapsed. As a result, therefore, these members became personally liable for all out-patient treatment, including X-ray photographs. The alternative to the provision of out-patient treatment in place of inpatient treatment is a reduction in members' subscriptions.
