MONEY TO AUSTRALIA

POSITION OF TRADESMEN. RESTRICTIONS MODIFIED. REMITTANCES TO FAMILIES. A modification of the exchange restrictions to enable tradesmen employed in New Zealand to apply for permits to send post office money orders for up to £5 a week to their families or dependents if the latter live overseas has been authorised. Instructions have been received by the chief post post office at Auckland that when such a permit is issued it will be of a permanent nature and will not require periodical renewal.

It is stipulated that the new regulation will not apply to workers' wives who may be on holiday in another country. They will be required to make application for the transfer of funds as in the past. The changed procedure is desiged to provide for the many Australian and other overseas tradesmen who have recently taken up employment in New Zealand, more particularly on the State Housing projects. When money orders for transmission overseas were reduced to £3 about a week ago, the difficult position of these men was discussed. However, they will now be able to send regular remittances to their families who are not living in the Dominion.
