PARALYSIS CASES

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. INCIDENCE IN WAIKATO. SIX IN LAST TWO MONTHS. Since the beginning of May six cases of infantile paralysis have been reported in the Hamilton health district. Three occurred in May and three in June, and those affected were four adults and two children, none of whom is stated to be seriously ill. Those have been the only cases notified to the Hamilton office of the Department of Health since the beginning of the year. Approached regarding the position, Dr. Turbott, Medical Officer of Health, said that there was no need for alarm. For some time after an epidemic the disease was liable to recur sporadically and as the individuals affected were well scattered in the district there was no chance of a major epidemic. No cases had been reported in Hamilton, the nearest point to the town where one had occurred being Rototuna. Two others occurred at Pirongia and Roto-o-rangi. The following cases of paralysis were reported to the Health Department in Hamilton: June 23, a male adult, of Pirongia; June 13, a male adult, of Otorohanga; June 19, a female adult, of Mokauiti; May, a female adult, of Rototuna; May, a boy aged 12 years, of Te Kuiti; May, a girl aged 11 years, of Roto-o-rangi.
