POULTRY SHOW
JUDGE’S COMMENTS. CAGE BIRD SECTION. Despite the fact of the Show clashing with Hawera and Whangarei Shows, the Society could congratulate itself on the number of entries received and also on the quality of the exhibits penned, commented Mr. G. H. Ambler, the judge of the poultry section at the Te Kuiti Winter Show. Many outstanding specimens were on show, including winners at the Rotorua, Auckland, Onehunga, Hamilton and Taumarunui Shows. It was also gratifying to see some of the older breeds such as Houdans and Campines represented. Game classes found Miss Duckering well to the fore with a wonderful team—a credit to the exhibitor. English Leghorns and Minorcas were not numerically strong in the fancy section. The winning cockerel penned by Mr. I. Ball of Henderson, followed on his success at Onehunga by again winning first place in the fancy section and also the John Jarvis Honour Bowl. The Barred Rock Cup was awarded to Mr. Raethel’s winning cockerel, well barred but just a trifle on the small side.
In the fancy Black Orpingtons some good speicmens were on exhibition, Mr. J. H. Sutton, of Hawera, penning a fine team. In the utility section competion was particularly keen in White Leghorns and Black Minorcas, Mr. K. L. Eden’s winning cockerel, other than being slightly heavy in comb, was a bird of outstanding merit and was awarded the Challenge Cup for best utility White Leghorn in the Show, also the Cup for the best utility light breed. The special for the best utility Minorca and best utility pullet was captured by a good pullet exhibited by Mr. Schmidt. The utility Black Orpington Cup was awarded to a grand bodied hen owned by I. Ball. Australorps provided big classes, the most successful breeder being Mr. A. Vierick.
Rhode Island Reds, made up in quality for lack of numbers, Mr. J. H. Sutton, the Hawera breeder, being the most successful exhibitor, his winning pullet winning the Cup for the best Rhode Island Red in the Show. Mr. L. Gi Marquand’s Light Sussex hen was a bird of good merit. The Khaki Campbell North Island Championship being competed for at Te Kuiti brought entries from as far north as Auckland. The championship was, however, captured by a local exhibitor, Mr. J. W. Walker. The Pekin Duck Championship was won by Mr. E. O. Collier. Bantams were entered in the children’s classes, specials being awarded to Eden brothers and Doug. Walker, the latter exhibiting a good blue Rosecomb. The judge of the cage bird section, Mr. Jack Brooks, said that the budgerigars on display could compete anywhere in New Zealand and compared favourably with those on view at the Hamilton Show. The champion budgerigar, exhibited by Mrs. Paulin, was a perfect specimen.
Though the standard of the canaries was not quite so high, quite a good all-round class of bird was on exhibition.
