PREVENTING "JITTERS
THE WAR COMPLEX. GOVERNMENT'S TASK. The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Sir Norman Nock, said recently that the Commonwealth Government, more than anyone else, had a definite responsibility to prevent the development of war "jitters" in Australia. He was commenting on the speech made by the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, to the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, in which he appealed to the members to avoid the "jitters" and the development of a war complex. Sir Norman Nock said the business community could scarcely be blamed if it was somewhat disconcerted by the continuous appeals by members of the Commonwealth Government to the people to conserve their resources for possible events, and by the repeated assertions that there would be increased taxation for war purposes. "The Australian people as a whole are influenced by these war scares, and are looking to the Commonwealth Government to ease their fears by a bold policy that will ensure continued employment and a steady development of Australian resources," he added. "A bold financial policy by the Commonwealth Government will be the best possible means of restoring the confidence of' the people so that business may be permitted to develop and expand normally."
