OIL IN YUGOSLAVIA
GERMANY GRANTED RIGHTS. It is reported that Germany has been granted the right to exploit large oil concessions in Yugoslavia. If the fields concerned are extensive, and the potential volume of crude production high, this news is of importance, for it means that the Reich will have a source of supply independent of the great Rumanian wells on which Herr Hitler is known to have had his eye. The Yugoslavian fields are a new discovery, or at least a new industry, for up to last year oil was not listed among the nation's resources in most standard works of reference. In 1937, for example, Yugoslavia produced no oil and exported none, but she imported mineral oils to the value of about £500,000. It is not surprising, howeve:, that oil should be there for the exploiting, for the former Serbian territory together with the rest of the post-war country is rich in a wide variety of minerals, the winning of which is now only beginning to be carried on with a degree of industrial efficiency comparable with neighbouring States, notably Germany.
