ROOT CROP QUALITY

EXTRAORDINARILY HIGH. The huge increase of 300 per cent, in the entries in the root crops section was probably the most gratifying feature of the exhibition. The judge, Mr. H. A. Lurman, was amazed at the large number of entries received —so many had entered that four hours were required to judge the exhibits. The quality, he said, was extraordinary in spite of the dry weather. The root crops section was one to be encouraged in this district for the exhibition at the Show was as good as could be found anywhere in the Dominion. Vegetable exhibits were also good. He said that the small farm garden exhibit, the Imperial globe turnips, and the red skinned swedes were outstanding. Increased interest was also displayed in the wool section. The judge, Mr. J. Perkins, stated that good weighty fleeces had been entered, and were in very good condition considering that the sheep had been shorn for six months. A most interesting display of wool manufacturing processes, of Italian and German synthetic wools, and of the different faults found in wool and pelts is being held in conjunction with the wool exhibit. Large increases in entries have also been recorded in the Home Industries section, especially in the cooking classes.' It is safe to say that here again new records - have been set. In previous years the Arts and Crafts ■ exhibition has been inclined to be the Cinderella of the Show, but this year this stand, though the space available is too small to do full justice to the articles, is one of the features of the Show. Both the number of entries and the standard of work are far ahead of those of previous Shows. Once again the School Section provides an interesting corner of the Show. Though the entries in the poultry and cage bird exhibition are. not quite equal to those of last year, the quality of the birds exhibited has advanced greatly. The two biggest attractions at the Show are. the Art Exhibitions by the Auckland Society of Arts, which have been attracting much interest, and the Competitions, for which every session has been crowded. Many special displays are worthy of the closest study—the Department of Agriculture stand, the Model Aero Club display, the display of model sailing vessels and model engines by Messrs. E. R. Petch and O. J. R. Sinclair respectively, a wonderful array of flowers exhibited by the W.D.F.U., the W.D.F.U. and Women’s Institutes’ Courts, a most interesting Maori exhibition of arts and crafts, and many other attractions combined to help make this easily the most successful Show yet held. The attractive and interesting trade stalls are among the main attractions of the Show, and cars and tractors are on view.
