PAY IN THE NAVY

INQUIRY BY COMMITTEE. AN IMMEDIATE START. SITTINGS HELD IN CAMERA. The committee appointed by the Government to investigate the pay and allowance of ratings of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy will begin work immediately. The announcement was made yesterday by the chairman of the committee, Mr. R. E. Price, conciliation commissioner in Auckland. Mr. Price returned from Wellington yesterday morning and was occupied throughout the day making arrangements for the opening of the inquiry. Mr. Price said the sittings of the committee would be held in camera. It would not be possible to complete the investigation until the return of H.M.S. Leander.

The Leander left Auckland yesterday morning for a cruise of the South Pacific. She will not return to Auckland until August 11.
