PARLIAMENT MEETS. FORMAL OPENING HELD. ELECTION OF SPEAKER.’ Preliminaries associated with the formal opening of Parliament took place yesterday afternoon, when the members of both Houses assembled in the Legislative Council chamber, where the commission was read to them by the Clerk of Parliaments, Mr. C. M. Bothamley, in the presence of the five commissioners appointed by the Governor-General, Viscount Galway.
The members of the House of Representatives then returned to their own chamber for the swearingin ceremony and the election of a Speaker. The swearing-in ceremony, performed by the Clerk of the House, Mr. T. D. H. Hall, occupied little under half an hour, 10 members taking the oath by affirmation. Mr. W. E. Barnard (Govt. —Napier) was re-elected as Speaker. Those not present at the ceremony were the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, who is suffering from an attack of influenza, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, Mr. H. G. Dickie (Opp., Patea), Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Opp., Central Otago), and Sir Apirana Ngata (Opp., Eastern Maori).
