LIQUOR IN DRY AREA. OHURA CONVICTIONS. Edward Kerry entered a plea of guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Taumarunui, to a charge of keeping liquor for sale at Ohura. Sergeant Abel said that the defendant had a license to make and sell hop home brew at not more than 3 per cent, strength. Samples of the liquor kept by the defendant were analysed and showed 5 per cent, proof spirit. He was convicted and fined £25.
Thomas Albert Manunui pleaded guilty to a charge of assisting and procuring the commission of the offence of supplying liquor to a native and was convicted and fined £4. He gave his name as Thomas Albert and his address as Manunui, whereas his real name is Thomas Albert Manunui (Maori). On charges of keeping common gaming house, Thomas Leslie Richards, with a previous conviction, was fined £6O, and John Wilkie was fined £SO. Both cases were the outcome of a police raid on June 17, in which De-tective-Sergenat Robertson, Sergeant Abel, and the Taumarunui police took part.
