WATER BEFORE LIQUOR.
(To the Editor)
Sir, I have read with interest the articles and letters in your paper on both our water supply and the liquor question. In seeking a solution to these two problems one soon discovers that they are as intrinsically related as cause and effect. As soon as the residents of Te Kuiti can obtain a glass of clear, sparkling water from the kitchen tap the incentive to buy outside beverages flavoured with malt and rye will largely disappear. Our Mayor is endeavouring to alleviate the water difficulty by making a common bath for the town, but I consider that although this scheme may have been excellent in Queen Anne’s day, it is not in keeping with modern ideas. As regards King Country licensing, the money which would be invested in hotels, etc., if diverted into improving the water supply, would perhaps not return so handsome a dividend, but would be used to a much better purpose and have the assurance of a regular return. —I am, etc.,
FRO BONO PUBLICO.
