The 2nd Company, Durham Light Infantry, has reinforced the British garrison at Tientsin. The military strength is now 300. All gates are manned in readiness for trouble. Army lorry patrols have been increased. Packed by steel-helmeted soldiers they are moving ceaselessly throughout the concession.
Japanese Army and Navy forces landed near the port of Swatow, South China, at dawn on Wednesday, according to a Japanese communique issued in Shanghai. A later official message from Tokyo announces that Japanese warships entered Swatow harbour at 8.30 a.m.
France is prepared to follow Britain in any form of protest or retaliatory measures against Japan. The well-known journalist, Madame Tabouis, states that Her Hitler informed the German Ambassador to Tokyo that he would not tolerate a victory by the democracies over Japan.
Mr. W. Strang, British Foreign Office Counsellor, and M. Paul-Emile Naggiar, French diplomat, met M. Molotoff, Soviet Foreign Commissar, at Moscow. It is understood at present that Britain and France will compromise on the difficulty regarding the Soviet attitude towards the Baltic States.
