MEDICAL OVERHAUL

NUTED DOCTOR'S PLEA. London, March 30. The need for men and women to undergo, periodical medical examinations was stressed by Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter, the noted physician, in an address at Cambridge. Sir Bruce, whose wife, the daughter of the lata Rev. D. Bruce, of Auckland, died in November, plans to visit New Zea-

land early next year. The bulk of sick men and women were not in bed, but on their feet trying - to carry on, Sir Bruce claimed. They sought the advice of their doctors only when forced to do so. Too often they had the haunting- fear that all was not well. They carried on suffVimg mental agony when a quiet talk with a doctor and an examination might have reassured them.

The prii :ary essential wa-. to convert the medical profession into what would be, in the main, a great health service. Instead of, as now, just spending many hours in attempting to patch up the invalid to try to keep him at his job, doctors would be medical officers of health to their patients. Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter also advocated extension of the hospital system and the provision of more convalescent accommodation.
