HEALTH.
A COMMON DISEASE. Inflammation of the gall-bladder is a relatively common disease, and on account of the vagueness of the symptoms it is often not recognised. Continued inflammation of the gallbladder leads to gall-stones. The symptoms of the disease of the gallbladder, including gallstones, are chronic dyspepsia, and in many cases pain under the ribs on the right side and under the right shoulder blade. Long-standing cases of chronic indigestion usually: have disease of the gall-bladder or of the appendix as an underlying cause. Jaundice occurs as a complication if the bile duct between the gallbladder and the intestines becomes obstructed by a gallstone or by mucus. It is characterised by yellowness of the skin and of the whites of the eyes, nausea, and intolerable itching of the skin.
The treatment of gall-bladder disease for the most part requires medical attention, and in many cases operations, but chronic mild cases can be kept in check by a simple regime. In such cases fatty, fried, or highlyseasoned foods must be avoided. Regular exercise must be taken, and the general diet should be easily digested.
