MUNICIPAL ELECTION

MR. MORTON ELECTED MAYOR. SUBSTANTIAL MAJORITY. RESULTS OF OTHER CONTESTS. Evidence of the very keen interest of the public of Te Kuiti at the present time in civic affairs was shown by the large number of votes recorded at the poll yesterday. In the last Mayoral election three years ago, a record for Te Kuiti was established when 1035 votes were recarded, but on Wednesday no fewer than 1172 electors cast their.votes. A large crowd gathered outside the Municipal Hall, and the results for the Mayoralty were announced shortly Defore 8 p.m. The result was as follows: H. T. Morton 512 K. W. Low .422 E. M. Mackersey 235 Informal 3 Mr. Morton, who had not expected the result to be made known so early, was not present at the time of the announcement, but arrived a few minutes later to receive a rousing reception and congratulations on all sides. In a brief speech, Mr. Morton thanked the people of Te Kuiti, and especially those who had worked so hard for him, for their confidence in him in electing him to the proud position of Mayor of the town. He said he hoped that in the next three years he would justify their choice. . Mr. Low congratulated Mr. Morton : on his victory, and' thanked his sup- , porters for their untiring assistance : and said he hoped that the interest ' displayed in civic affairs during the velection would continue; Mr. Mackersey, on behalf of Mrs. [ Mackersey and himself, ; expressed thanks to his supporters, and said ■ that, although naturally disappointed, he could accept his defeat as a sportsman, and he assured Mr. Morton that ' he would be behind him in any»mattei ! in which he could render assistance. WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD. In the Waikato Hospital Board,election the sitting members, Mrs."G. K. ,ofJEio-Pio, was returned with a majority of 68 votes. The voting resulted as follows: Mrs. H. M. Mullins 359 Informal 23 Mr. Cato thanked the electors for their confidence in him in returning him at the top of the poll, and said - that he hoped that as he was a sitting member of the Board, this confidence was an endorsement of the present administration of the Board. Mr. Brook also expressed his thanks to the electors and assured them that he would give of his very best at all times. BOROUGH COUNCIL. Although it was fairly late when the results of the Borough Council election were announced owing to the large number of candidates offering, there was still a large crowd waiting outside the Council Chambers to hear the result of the polling. The following nine candidates were elected:—
