It will probaby surprise New Zeaanders to learn that the bird on the back of the current sixpenny coin is "a female kookaburra or huia bird."' At any rate, that is the description given in an overseas coin catalogue and retailed to an amused audience at the last meeting of the New Zealand Numismatic Society. It was also stated that an American publication expressed the opinion that "of all the British colonies, New Zealand has probably the most distinctive set of coins." The crown piece was scribed as one of the most striking of modern coins, with a value in JNew York of sixteen shillings.
