HEALTH CAMPAIGN

A SATISFACTORY RESULT. A meeting of the executive of the National Health Campaign was held on Thursday night, Mr. T. M. Crawford presiding. A report submitted by the secretary, Mr. J. H. Thornton, disclosed that the net results from the sale of health stamps amounted to £ll 7s sd, the sum of £ls 9s 3d was received in donations, making a total of £26 16 8d for the town of Te Kuiti. A dance organised by sympathisers of the movement at Waimiha realised £22 9s 6d; the staff of the Waitomo Hostel contributed £4 2s, and Otorohanga forwarded £7 5s 6d, making a total of £6O 13s 8d from these districts. Mr. Thornton stated that as there were several lists yet to come in, it was likely that this amount would be still greater. The chairman stated that the result of the campaign was most satisfactory. Those in sympathy with this movement had worked hard to raise such a sum, and the thanks of the executive were due to all concerned. Further amounts would be forthcoming from other parts of the district, but these districts were under the control of the Director-General of Health.

Mrs. W. A. Lee said that had it not been for the infantile paralysis epidemic the result would have been com siderably more, as many people were of the opinion that no children’s camps would be organised this year.

The chairman said that it was not certain whether the camps would be held this year, but Easter being early this year, there was a probability of the children’s camp being held then.

The secretary said it was interesting to note that the egg and potato drive by the school children had realised £1 12s Bd.

Some discussion then took place regarding the work of the executive should the camp be held this year, and it was decided to set up a subcommittee consisting of Mrs Jackson, Messrs. Crawford, Coutts and Thornton, to make the necessary arrangements to send the children to the camp. On the motion of the chairman, a vote of thanks was passed to those who had contributed to the fund, those who had purchased the health stamps, the organisers in the country districts, also to the members of the W.D.F.U. for their helpful co-opera-tion. The chairman also referred to the services of the secretary, Mr. Thornton, who had carried on his voluntary work during a particularly busy period in his own official duties. The chairman reported that the following nominations had been received for children to attend the Health Camp: From Taumarunui and Kaitieke Counties 51, Ohura 15, Ongarue 5, Otorohanga 12, Te Kuiti and district 56—total 139.
