FARMERS’ UNION

MEETING OF TE KUITI BRANCH. A general meeting of the Te Kuiti branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Municipal Hall yesterday, the chairman, Mr. Farrer, presiding over ten members. In the absence of the secretary, Mr. H. Mason was elected secretary for the meeting. In view of a request by the secretary of the Auckland Provincial Executive, members were asked to obtain evidence with regard to rising farm and living costs with a view of placing proof of rising costs before the Government, and certain members volunteered to endeavour to obtain the necessary figures to forward to the Provincial Executive for the purpose of assisting that body in obtaining results throughout the Dominion. The matter of the proposal of the Government to institute half-yearly inspections of motor vehicles was brought up, and after some discussion it was moved by Mr. Findlay and seconded by Mr. McLeay, that the proposal should not receive the support of the Union. The next matter brought forward was the condition of the Te Kuiti saleyards, several speakers commenting on this at the recent ram . fair. It was resolved that the Farmers’ Union approach the Amalgamated Auctioneers’ Association with a request that steps be taken to improve matters. The motion, “That facilities accorded vendors and purchasers of stock, and particularly stud stock, are disgraceful, and that the Amalgamated Auctioneers’ Association should be approached with the request that steps be taken to improve matters,” was carried. Mr. Pettigrew moved and Mr. Findlay seconded that the Te Kuiti branch of the Farmers’ Union was against any attempt on the part of the Government to fix a guaranteed.price for wool. The motion was carried. Mr. Mason advised the meeting that he had received a letter from Mr. Angus, secretary of the Tauranga branch, that he (Mr. Angus) had been invited to speak to the Te Anga branch on the compensating price question. It was moved by Mr. McLeay and seconded by Mr. Pettigrew that the secretary write to Mr. Angus to ascertain if he would also speak at Te Kuiti; also to find out what the expenses would be. If satisfactory arrangements could be arrived at the secretary was instructed to fix a date for the meeting.

Mr. Pettigrew inquired about a remit at a previous meeting referring to the appointment of a reputable farmer in each district by the Union for the purpose of valuing land on behalf of farmers who are making use of mortgage legislation. The secretary stated that the remit had been passed by the Northern King Country Sub-Provincial Council and forwarded to Auckland.

On Mr. Findlay enquiring regarding a previous remit relating to derating of lands, the secretary stated that the matter had gone through. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
