REPLY TO “MUSIC LOVER.”

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —If you will kindly insert these few lines in reply to the. socalled “Music Lover’s” letter I shall regard it as a favour. In the first place I would assure this critic that I hesitated to reply, but on reflection I came to the conclusion that it might be a real hardship on this person to continue to hold on to his shilling, for which I take the responsibility of having- inveigled him into parting with. However, if this worshipper of music, who obviously is so highly educated in music, will call and let me have a look at him, I will promptly return his shilling and inform the public of Te Kuiti who it is who is so gifted amongst us. We have by far too many of “Music Lover’s” mentality in this town, and not nearly enough of those ready to come forward and do something, and until we have more of the latter we shall continue to be in the backwash. As I was the person responsible for promoting both this year’s concert and also the one held last year, I felt that I could not do less than defend the artists from the aspersions cast upon them, seeing that they are unable to defend themselves, otherwise I would have treated with contempt any correspondent who is not bold enough to sign his name. Finally, your critic’s remarks concerning the playing of the Band require a brief reference, and the best reply I can make to him is to invite him to come and assist them to achieve better results, in short come forward and do something- instead of mud-slinging from behind the cover of a nom de plume, to which he certainly has no claim. Finally, I wish to assure your correspondent that if he will call on me, he will receive his shilling back again, but only on condition that I am allowed to reveal the name of this giant musical genius who dwells amongst us, and after that I shall not under any circumstances be drawn into further replies to this critic.— I am, etc.,

A. BLACKMAN, President, Te Kuiti Municipal Band.
