ITALY AND THE LEAGUE
MEMBERSHIP IN THE BALANCE. WILL NOT COLLABORATE WITH SANCTIONISTS. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) Rome, May 13. Italy's membership of the League hangs in the balance pending Baron Aloisi's explanation of the situation to Signor Mussolini. Signor Gayda declares that spite is the sole remaining purpose of the sanctions. Italy's first step in considering this is the withdrawal of her delegation from Geneva. This will precede an examination of her position in the world with or without her League membership. Signor Gayda emphasises that Italy will never collaborate with the sanctionist Powers until the sanctions are abandoned. She can usefully associate herself with many nonsanctionist countries. A breach between Italy and Geneva may become the fundamental breach in Europe.
