HIGHER PENSION RATES

OLD AGE PAYMENTS. AVAILABLE TO-MORROW. The restoration of old age pension rates retrospective to July 31, which was authorised by the Finance Act last week, will come into force with the monthly payment of pensions on Wednesday, according to a statement made by the Minister of Pensions, Hon. J. G. Cobbe. All pensioners drawing the full pension, which during the period of cuts amounted to £3 11s Bd, will receive an extra 12s 6d this month and thereafter an extra 4s 2d monthly. Mr. Cobbe said that the staff of the Pensions Department had been more than ordinarily busy for some days in an effort to prepare the vouchers for the increased pension payments. There were about 40,000 old age pensioners and to prepare the warrants enabling the retrospective payment on the ordinary pay day the staff had to work long hours and throughout the week-end. In addition the department was now busy on the pay warrants for the increases made in widows’, miners’ and war pensions, the Minister continued, and it was estimated that the back pay for these classes would be available by the end of the - week.
