UNLICENSED SERVICE

CARTAGE TO AUCKLAND. ADJOURNMENT GRANTED. An application for an adjournment was opposed in the Court on Thursday by the prosecutor, T. C. Clissold, Main Highways Traffic Inspector, when F. Bredenbeck was charged with operating an unlicensed goods service from Te Kuiti to Auckland. Mr. Clissold said that the defendant was served with the summons two days ago, and yesterday assured witness he would appear to-day. Witness came down from Auckland, but in the meantime the defendant obtained a temporary licence and.left for Auckland. Owing to the class of goods carried, the defendant was doing a considerable amount of harm to licensed operators. He was creeping through to Auckland night after night, and after being watched for 12 months he had at last been caught with the goods. Mr. K. W. Low said that the notice was short and he had just been instructed. He understood that Bredenbeck had been in Auckland on several occasions but in relation to his own business and not that of other people. Mr. Clissold: I have undeniable evidence to refute those statements. He was here yesterday, and he obtained this temporary licence to gain time. In the meantime he will cause more trouble.

The Magistrate, however, having regard to the short notice given, granted the adjournment.
