SYMES' ASSAULT CASE
WIFE STILL IN HOSPITAL. REMAND TILL SEPTEMBER 12. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Palmejrston North, this day. A remand until September 12 was granted in the Magistrate's Court when Manley Symes, labourer, of Pahiatua, appeared charged that on July 24th at Te Matai, Palmerston North, he did assault Elsie Elizabeth Symes so as to cause actual bodily harm.
Detective Barling, in asking for a remand, said the wife was still in hospital, but was improving slowly. For accused, Mr. Gordon, his counsel, said there had been a provision that he (accused's counsel) should accompany accused to the hospital every time accused visited his wife. He had visited his wife four or five times during the last fortnight. Counsel asked that the provision-for him to accompany accused be now withdrawn. The other party had been forbidden to see accused's wife, both by the wife and the' hospital authorities. Accused and his wife were on perfectly good terms. There was no chance of any clash arising. Detective Barling said he had no objection to dispensing- with the provision mentioned.
A remand was then granted and the provision withdrawn. Bail was renewed on the previous terms.
