TE KUITI v. WAITANGURU.

Te Kuiti beat Waitanguru by 12 points .to nil on Rugby Park last Saturday. Hard pressed in the forwards, they managed to get the ball out to the backs to secure a win by the margin above. The game was a hard one, and rough tactics were not absent. Some players in both teams appeared to believe in wrestling grips and late tackling.

Both teams first settled down to a hard forward duel. . Then a dribbling rush through by R. Martin sped Te Kuiti to the 25 line. J. Evans also backed him up, seized the ball and set his backs in motion, the leather going through McLeod and Taylor, for Beeche to speed across. R. Barlow made a good attempt at goal but failed. 3—o.

Te Kuiti pressed down to the 25 area. A cross kick from the lineout saw McLeod collect and boot through. Following up fast, Krogh was a split second too late. After that the forward duel recommenced, play alternating from one team’s territory to the other. Craig and Pickrang initiated harrying attacks which were dangerous to Te Kuiti. Once they placed Te Kuiti right on their line, but a penalty gave that team the chance to clear. When the ball was kept in the forwards there was little to pick between the teams —the Waitanguru forwards, with Craig and Pickrang aggressive, and Brooks and Hasselburg sound dependable players, may have had an advantage over Te Kuiti, of whom the junior Martin played one of the best games. But when Te Kuiti could send their backs away once the leather was out of reach of the visitors’ breakaways, the team could offer but little defence. Thus just before half-time Beeche flung the ball infield for Evans to set the backs away. Krogh, with a splendid effort, twisted and dived to beat two men and gain a try. McLeod failed to convert.

The Greens for a while after halftime kept up a steady offensive. A forward rush with Peterson in the van resulted in territorial gain for the Whites; then the back's went away, B. Barlow cutting back to miss the line by inches.

Then Phillips started a dribbling rush, and was joined by Sunnex and Craig. Beeclie forced a »split second before they got on the ball. For the second time within a few minutes Waitanguru were very unlucky not to cross; Craig came up on the right wing’s centre kick, and Brooks was very unlucky riot to get on the ball in time.

When Te Kuiti handled, however, they were definitely in the ascendant. B. Barlow twisted through most of the Waitanguru team and a few seconds later Beeche was prevented from crossing by a knoekon. However, it was not long before the rearguard in a perfect movement sent Beeche over in the corner. McLeod’s kick failed. 9—o.

A break by Craig nearly saw the Greens cross. Sunnex’s mark in front of the goalmouth was not allowed; then with a speedy burst upfield Krogh led away the attack. Then, just before time, McLeod put a fine penalty shot over the goal. 12 —0.

Mr. R. Mildon was the referee.

HANGATIKI v. OTOROHANGA.

The game between Hangatiki and Otorohanga played at Hangatiki was very fast and open. The Hangatiki backs gave their best display thi.3 season, the tries all coming from back movements. Noble with Swanberg arid H. Kite were outstanding, while the forwards all played their usual solid game. In the Otorohanga team the Cameron brothers and Box played well, while the forwards did well against a heavier pack.

From the kick-off Otorohanga attacked, the backs handled well until a knoekon held them up. The Otorohanga forwards kept up the pressure until a penalty relieved Hangatiki. Play hung round midfield until a rush by Smith and Kempthorne caught J. Kite in possession. A. Finlay secured and crossed the line. K. Cameron made a good attempt to convert. Otorohanga 3, Hangatiki 0. Hangatiki attacked strongly until Kino relieved with a mark. Otorohanga kept pressing and Kino fielding, dropkicked from well out, a beautiful kick missing narrowly. Noble, Swanberg and Armstrong were associated in a passing bout which took play to Otorohanga’s 25 where, from a scrum, the ball went to Noble, to Swanberg, S. Te Kanawa back to Swanberg, who sent H. Kite over in the corner. J. Kite missed the kick. Hangatiki 3, Otorohanga 3. Gault and P. Nikora were associated in a dribbling rush, the ball going out at the corner. L. Cameron, K. Cameron and Finlay brought it back to Hangatiki’s territory where McCready had an unsuccessful shot at goal from a penalty. Otorohanga kept up the offensive and C. Finlay intercepted a pass, and after a good run McCready, who had a clear run in but lost possession. Hangatiki returned to the attack and Otorohanga were penalised in front of the posts for obstruction. J. Kite took the kick and raised the flags, but the referee

disallowed the shot. From a scrum Noble secured to cut through the defence to score a nice try well out. The kick failed, and half-time sounded with the score: Hangatiki 6, Otorohanga 3. On resuming Hangatiki attacked strongly, and Box and L. Cameron made saves in quick succession. Otorohanga worked back to Hangatiki’s 25. C. Finlay and McCready broke through rapidly, Swanberg just getting back in time to force. The Hangatiki backs took play back to Otorohanga’s 25. Noble secured and passed to H. Kite, who went over at the corner. Nikora’s kick fell short. Hangatiki 9, Otorohanga 3. The Hangatiki pack kept up the pressure but Otorohanga gradually worked play back and A. Finlay, following up fast, charged down a defending kick, lack* of support losing a try. Hangatiki forwards worked back and a passing bout was held up on the line. The play returned to midfield and S. Te Kanawa, following up fast, secured and short punted for Swanberg to field and cross. Hislop’s kick missed. Hangatiki 12, Otorohanga 3. Gault and Davis were prominent in a dribbling rush, but the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards with Otorohanga attacking strongly, the final score being: Hangatiki 12, Otorohanga 3. Mr. B. Carr very ably controlled the game. WAITETE AND TE KUITI JUNIORS DRAW. The Waitete and Te Kuiti Juniors again drew when they met on Rugby Park last Saturday. Te Kuiti took the field with only 13 men, and Waitete pressed an advantage. Sanderson came round to collect McLeod’s defending kick before it reached the line and dived across for a score. The kick failed. Strengthened by R. Martin, during the second half Te Kuiti held the territorial advantage, Waitete only twice breaking away to the 25. Te Kuiti’s 3 points were secured when McLeod dribbled right through the team to the line, where Richardson notched a try. L. Barlow missed a kick under the posts. For the remaining portion of the game no score resulted. Mr. C. Walker was referee. REP. TEAM SELECTED. CHANGES IN BACKS. The following team has been selected by Messrs. F. Wolfe," J. B.
