RETURNED MEN

SUBSIDISING RELIEF FUNDS. PROVISION MADE BY BOROUGH. A sum of £SO is to be placed on the draft estimates of the Borough for the purpose of subsidising £1 for £1 the Patriotic Association and R.S.A. in providing unemployment relief for returned men. This decision was made by the Council last evening. Cr. Hetet, who raised the question, said that in past years these organisations had continued to approach the Council, but that body never had sufficient funds to subsidise them to anything like the manner hoped, though very good work had been done for the town. The Mayor said there was a £4lO surplus, but Cr. Hetet said he would like to see a definite provision made in the estimates.

The clerk said the R.S.A. had spent£44 in the town last year, and the Borough had subsidised them with £2O.

Cr. Hetet moved that £SO be placed on the estimates for this purpose. Cr. Rundle moved an amendment that the Council subsidise £ for £ up to £75. In the past years the organisations mentioned had spent money with the County and other bodies which might well be spent in the Borough. The amendment was seconded by Cr. Douglas.

The amendment was lost on a show of hands, and the motion providing for £1 for £1 subsidy up to £SO was carried.
