EXCITEMENT AT THAMES

A RICH GOLD LEAD.

GOLD AND SILVER RETURNS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Thames, this day.

Thames mining circles are all agog as the result of an announcement today of sensational values from test crushing at the School of Mines battery of 50 tons of ore from the Sylvia mine in the Tararu Creek area of the goldfield. An official test shows that, 46.675 tons were treated and gave 201 ozs of gold and 122 oz. of silver in concenti’ates, in addition to which 3oz. 3dwt. of bullion was recovered from the stamper boxes and G9oz. gold and 83oz. silver from the sands. It is estimated that the total value at £7 per oz. for gold and 2s per oz. for silver is £1941.

In May last year the Sylvia Mines Development, Ltd., an AucklandThames syndicate, re-opened the mine, which has been one of the most consistent producers. The ore treated came from a winze sunk on a reef at No. 4 level, where the reef has a continuity of length of over a thousand feet with an average width of five' feet.

All the assays are most encouraging and mining authorities hold that the prospects at this depth are very good, No. 4 .level being 460 feet above sea level. The potentialities of this mine under modern, methods of treating complex ores are considered of great importance to the Thames mining industry. It is understood that the syndicate contemplates reorganising the company for the large scale development of the mine.
