70 MEN LEAVE WORK
PROTEST AGAINST RELIEF CONDITIONS. SUPPORT OF CAPT. RUSHWORTH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Whangarei, this day. Approximately seventy married relief workers employed by the Land and Survey Department on drainage works at Hikurangi swamp, ceased work, yesterday as a protest against the conditions under which they are working. The allegations include inadequate shelter, wet weather deduction for time lost, payment for own transport to and from job, no sick pay, no travelling time, non-payment of the standard rate of wages, 12s 6d a day, which the men demand. At a mass meeting to-day they decided to remain out till their demands are met.
Captain Rushworth, M.P., congratulated the men on having taken the plunge, though he had not urged them to take it.
"I am not popular with the Government, but for what it is worth you have my moral support," he said. "I am with you."
