HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS.

Don't throw away the liquid which is usually left in the bottom of the pickle bottle. Save it and add it to salad dressing instead of mustard and vinegar. It also makes an extremely piquant addition to meat when you are making sandwiches. One of the best and easiest ways to peel walnuts when you want them for cooking purposes, or for serving in little dishes on the dinner table, is to soak them for a few minutes in cold water. Almonds left in hot water for five minutes will skin as you touch them. Old scarves made delightful trimmings for children's frocks and coats. No matter whether it be the lightweight woollen scarf or one made in heavy silk —the same purpose is served if each is used with the correct material. Those of the flannel variety —especially of the plaid pattern — are sweet and dainty when sewn as false hems or crossway pieces with belt or collar to match on a plain self-coloured material like French flannel or Viyeila. The brown plaids are very effective when used on a light biege woollen material, and I have just used my white crepe scarf of last winter to trim and lengthen a little dress of apple green. With collar and cuffs to match the crossway bottom hem, the result is very charming. Fluffy scarves of the brushed wool kind make very dressy trimmings 'for the toddler's outdoor coat. They are useful for replacing thin and wornout fur and are almost as warm. With a beret or cap made from the same scarf to match the trimmings, a chic and inexpensive outfit for chilly summer evenings can be achieved. The discarded collars and cuffs can be used as patterns for cutting out the new if care is taken to leave material for turnings, and any old beret will serve as a pattern for the 'new one.
