FUTURE OF FARMING.

There seems to be a growing realisation on the part of farmers that scientific methods and smaller holdings will play a large part in the future of farming in New Zealand. Slack farming methods and the fact that many farmers occupied holdings that were too big or them to work profitably were held by a Christchurch agriculturist to be responsible to a great extent for the unfortunate position of the man on the land today. He claimed that the time was not far distant when the whole position would have to be reviewed, for to-day it was the small farm, unencumbered with mortgages, well tilled and well manured, that was producing the crops and butter-fat. He knew of many cases where farmers holding 500 acres were able to work only about 100 acres of it successfully, and added that if some of these farmers sold part of their holdings and used the money to make full use of the remainder they would be infinitely better off than they were today. Farmers spent too much time growling and blaming everyone but themselves, he added.
