COMMUNITY GARDENS
THEFTS FROM GROUNDS. VANDALS LIABLE TO PROSECUTION. A contemptible theft took place last week-end, when some person or persons dug' and took away a row oi' potatoes in the community gardens in Queen Street. This is the first serious theft that has taken place in these gardens, and it has been decided to prosecute anyone found helping themselves in this way. These gardens are vested in the Borough Council, and the administration of the garden has been delegated to the Unemployment Committee. These thefts are most despicable, as nearly the whole of the work in the gardens is being done by free labour by the unemployed, who are entitled to the full benefits of the proceeds. The community gardens are looking very well at present, and comprise 4% acres of potatoes and vegetables on the property of the Te Kuiti Land Co., in Queen Street about an acre of potatoes in a Crown section on Awakino Road, and a quarter acre of vegetables on Mr. Bredenbeck's property at Te Kumi. The first lot of early potatoes will be ready for distribution before Christmas.
