BALLOT FOR LAND.
WAIKERIA FARM AREA.
FIVE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS There were 122 applicants for five sections oij, Crown land, formerly portion of the Waikeria prison farm, for which ballots were held by the Land Board on Wednesday. The sections total 472 acres of block 11 of the Puniu Survey District, Otorohanga County. Following were the successful applicants:— Section 3: Mrs. M. Cavers, Waikeria. Section 4: C. M. Dean, Horahora, Cambridge. Section 5: R. T. Cotter, Hinuera. Section 6: L. Kearney, care of Y.M.C.A., Auckland. Section 7: Mrs. G. M. Ilarvev. Edgecumbe. The block, which is held to be suitable for dairying, is situated on the Waikeria prison farm road. It is from two and a half to three and a half miles from the Kihikihi post office and school, and about six miles from the Te Awamutu dairy factory, railway station and saleyards by a metalled road. It comprises flat to easy undulating country, slightly broken in parts by small swampy depressions. The soil is light to medium loam, resting on clay formation. Practically the whole of the block is described as being in fair pasture, enabling stock to be placed on it immediately. Descriptions of the sections state that section 3, of 92 acres, is watered by the Mangapaia stream and springs. About 88 acres are ploughable. Section 4 comprises 93 acres, all ploughable and watered by springs. There are 90 acres in section 5, which is watered by the Moerika stream and springs. Section 6, of 84 acres, is watered by dam and swings, while springs water section 7, which totals 113 acres.
An official of the Lands Department stated that an excellent type of settlers went to the ballot. Most of the applicants possessed some canital and were of the type that' should prove successful.
