MAIROA

(Own Correspondent.) The annual school picnic was held in Mr. Thorn's paddock on Friday last. The weather being favourable made the picnic a success. Quite a nice crowd turned out in spite of the busy time on the farms. Visitors from adjoining districts were -esent. School prizes were presented during the day to the pupils of Mairoa school. The results of running races, etc., were:— Girls.—Over 12: Elaine Le Vallaint 1, Fanny Cole 2, Maysie Cole 3. 10 to 12 years: Moreen Thompson 1, Lottie Cole 2, Gwen Le Vallaint 3. 6to 8 years: Hazel McGinn 1, Laurel Vant 2, Margaret Thorns 3. 8 years and under (special): Nancy Milne 1, Muriel White 2, Eva Armstrong 3. A dance was held in the evening at the school but it was not so.well attended as usual. The weather still holds out fine and the general tank supplies of water are very short, otherwise there is nothing suffering to any great extent. Paddocks are looking well limed and the top-dressing of" the whole block is getting on comfortably. The milk supply is gradually going down, though the stock looks exceptionally well. The loose metal on the Pungarehu Road, upper end, is a source of annoyance to everyone. It is wearing out the cars, animals, shoes and patience unnecessarily. It needs attention while the weather is good to get it in decent order for winter.
