MAHOENUI

Last Saturday evening a farewell dance was given to Mr. and Mrs. C. Croall, who are leaving Mahoenui to reside in Hamilton. It was a very representative gathering, and a pleasant evening was passed. After supper Mr. J. Old, in a speech of farewell to the guests of the evening, spoke of the good work done by both Mr. and Mrs. Croall in all social enterprises and farming for the twenty years they have been residents here. On behalf of the community Mr. Old then presented Mr. and Mrs. Croall with a beautiful travelling rug as a token of the esteem in which they are held, and wished them luck and prosperity in their future home. Mr. Croall suitably responded, thanking the people for their present, and saying that he had had many happy years in Mahoenui. He spoke of his arrival here nearly twenty years ago and the reception given to him and three other new arrivals in Mr. Old's woolshed. He also mentioned that it took him a whole . day to travel from Mokau to Mahoenui in a buggy, a trip now accomplished in an hour. Later in the evening as Mr and Mrs. Croall and family were bidding their adieux, "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" was sung. The people of Mahoenui will retain many pleasant memories of Mr. Croall both as a local storekeeper and farmer. Among the ladies present were:— Mesdames Croall, beige ensemble; J. Old, brown costume; A. H. Rattenbury, figured crepe de chine; A. C. Moir, floral georgette; Avery, fawn rayon; T. Summers, navy crepe de chine; N. D. Jones, black satin and net; R. Rattenbury, floral ninon; Misses Croall, florl taffeta; Sadler, white satin; Roberts, floral crepe de chine; Rattenbury, coin spot spun silk; Moir, green silk moracain; Betty Moir, figured silk; Worboys, black georgette; A. Toss, scarlet satin; J. Rattenbury, floral georgette; K. Sole, figured rayon; Q. Wetere, pale blue satin.

The Mahoenui Dramatic Society held its annual meeting on the 29th February- Quite a number of members and would-be members attended. Mr. Jones was elected chairman, with Mrs. T. Summers secretary. A new committee comprised of Mrs. A. H. Rattenbury. Mrs. N. D. Jones, Misses Worboys and J. Rattenbury, and Messrs. Roberts and G. Tubman was selected. Mrs. T. Summers was re-elected secretary and treasurer. It was decided to have two one-act plays with musical items to complete the programme. The choice of plays was left to the committee, and Mr. Moss was asked to take the position of producer. It is expected that the performance will take place towards the end of April. The proceeds will be in aid of the hall.

Personal.

Miss Sadler, New Plymouth, who has been staying with Mrs. R. Rattenbury, returned home on Monday. Mrs. Summers, Papakura, is on a visit to her sons, Messrs. T. and L. Summers. Mr. T. Summers and Mr. G. Sole went to New Plymouth for the agricultural Show.

Mrs. L. Ridling left here on Monday en route for a trip to Australia per the "Maunganui." Mrs. Jones met with a rather painful accident a few days ago While preserving fruit a jar burst and cut a deep gash in her hand. However, neighbours promptly took her to the doctor at Pio Pio who put some stitches in the cut, and we are now pleased to hear that Mrs. X ones * s progressing favourably
