MANIAPOTO v. ROTORUA.

LATTER'S GOOD WIN. During the week-end the Maniapoto representatives journeyed to Rotorua to play the home side. Rotorua won the toss and elected to bat, making 240 runs "before the last wicket fell. Playing under conditions, both on the wicket and in the outfield, that they were not accustomed to, Maniapoto, with one or two exceptions, failed to produce their best form, with the re-: suit that they were all dismissed for 109 runs, Rotorua thus winning by 131 runs on the first innings. Rotorua did not make a.very good start, Harding, who partnered J. Burton, the erstwhile Maniapoto representative, being caught by Hine off Davidson when he had scored a single. Godsalve and Burton carried - the score to 56, when Lusk caught the former. The score was 102 for three wickets when Hinton, who made 23 by patient cricket, fell a victim to a catch by Lusk off McLeod. The bowling did not seem to be troubling the home batsmen, all of whom played it with confidence, despite the quick changes by the Maniapoto skipper. Burton, playing orthodox cricket, was dropped early in the outfield, but from then on never gave a semblance of a chance. He was finally caught by Arneil, after scoring 43, a lone boundary being included in his tally, Gresham and Sutherland went out without scoring, but McGill (54) and Lenihan (33), the Rotorua captain, added 80 runs for the eighth wicket, and Reed carried his bat when? the captain decided to retire. Seven Maniapoto bowlers were tried, Lusk, who took two wickets for 24, being the most successful. Martin secured two wickets for 37, but with a little more support from the fields-" men, would have come out with a much better average. The brunt of. the bowling for the visitors fell on Arneil, who sent down 22 overs, off which 50 runs were scored for two wickets.

Maniapoto opened with Lusk and McLecd, but the latter was caught by Harding off Reed when he had scored a brace. Evans and Lusk improved the position, scoring 37 before Lusk, who had made 13, put his leg in front of a straight one and was out legbefore to Godsalve. Three runs only were added and Liddell, who had just opened his scoring account, was out, Hinton taking a fine catch. Two wickets, Hine and Martin, fell quickly, five wickets being down for 45 runs. Arneil was shaping nicely, having scored 18 confidently, when he was caught by Sutherland. Up till this time the Rotorua skipper had tried six bowlers, none of whom the Maniapoto players appeared to be at ease Snell (11) and Dinsdale (27) provided the most profitable partnership of the innings. Dinsdale gave a lively display, his total including five boundaries. G. Martin was run eut> Davidson, the last man in, carried his bat.
