CHARGES AGAINST POLICE. BY NEW GUARD LEADER. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 11.40 a.m.) Sydney, this day. In a speech at Manly, which was broadcast, Colonel Eric Campbell, leader of the New Guard, denied Police Commissioner Child's statement in his recent report to the Government, and reiterated his allegations against the Police. Department. Colonel Campbell said: "It makes me boil with indignation when I think that a gentleman in Mr. Childs' position has to recourse to such allegations to try to get away from straight out facts of my statement that a sergeant of police was promoted for his activities in connection with the Lane Cove case which has been denied."

Colonel Campbell then told how a Sergt. Clark had called at New Guard headquarters and showed him a crown on his arm, saying: "It's an .ill wind that blows nobody any good," and pointing to the crown, said "I got that out of your prosecution."

A last appeal to Mr. Lang to remit the interest in which he defaulted, now standing at £830,000, is made in a letter posted to him by Mr. Lyons . Though the Commonwealth Parliament meets to-day, the proposed resolutions under section 6 of the Act declaring the urgency of payment will not be introduced until Wednesday, presumably to allow time for Mr. Lang to take advantage of the final opportunity for a voluntary settlement. Mr. Lyons received Mr. Lang's urgent telegram beseeching the Commonwealth Government to withhold any action until the High Court had Idecided the legality of the Act. & Mr. • Lyons refused to make any Rmnient on the matter.

Mr. Lang has received an invitation from Mr. Lyons inviting the New South Wales j&overnment's concurrence in the proposed conference to discuss the unemployment problem. The Commonwealth Prime Minister announced in the letter that the conference would be held in Melbourne on the 12th April, and a special committee would be appointed immediately to make suggestions and recommendations.

GROWTH OF COMMUNISM. BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 12.15 p.m.) Sydney, this day. At the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Australia, the growth of Communism was referred to and a motion unanimously carried urging the Federal Government to deal effectively with the evil. A resolution was adopted favouring action to combat bribery and corruption and secret commissions. OPENING OF HARBOUR BRIDGE. POLICE TO PROTECT MR: LANG. The Daily Telegraph says that nearly half the numerical strength of the New South Wales police force, and some fifteen hundred men will be on special duty on 19th March, when 'the Sydney Bridge is opened, and the authorities will be fully prepared in the event of trouble. Nearly five hundred people will be on duty on the bridge itself, and the official dais will be closely guarded with a large squad of plain clothes officers watching over 'Mr. Lang, and mounted troopers will be held in readiness for any trouble.
