RACING ENVIRONMENT
AN ORPHANS’ PICNIC. ACTION OF A MATRON. Because the Otago Motor Club’s annual picnic for orphans was held on the Wi’ngatui racecourse, the matron of one Presbyterian orphanage refused to allow the children under her charge to attend. Eighteen children were thus debarred from the picnic, while between 300 and 400 children from other orphanages, including Presbyterian institutions, were having a good time. The club is indignant over the incident, and is bringing a complaint before the Presbyterian Social Service Association. An official of the association stated that the question of the children attending the picnic was left to the matrons of the institutions, and the woman in charge of the particular orphanage probably felt that a racing environment would affect the children. Last year also the children from the same orphanage were debarred from attending the picnic, but the motor club was given no explanation then.
